Algiers, November 18, 2025 – The United Nations Security Council has not endorsed Morocco’s claims of sovereignty over Western Sahara, according to a statement made by the Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf. The Minister made the remarks during a press conference held at the Ministry headquarters on Tuesday.
Minister Attaf highlighted what he described as a notable development concerning the Western Sahara issue at the end of last month. He emphasized that the matter remains open and under consideration by the United Nations, the Security Council, and the UN Committee on Decolonization.
“The Western Sahara file is not closed,” Attaf stated, “it remains before the United Nations, the Security Council, and the UN Committee on Decolonization.” He further asserted, “The Security Council has not adopted Moroccan theses, nor has it recognized Morocco’s alleged sovereignty over Western Sahara. It has not decided on the basis of negotiations or the outcome of those negotiations.”
Attaf elaborated that the Security Council’s resolution on Western Sahara leaves the determination of the basis and outcome of negotiations, and the agreement on them, to the parties in the conflict. He also noted that the resolution maintains all the established principles for resolving the Western Sahara issue.
DZWatch will continue to follow this developing story and provide updates as they become available. The situation in Western Sahara remains a critical point of international discussion, and Algeria’s perspective offers important context to the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
