US Approves Patriot Missile Upgrade for Ukraine as Russia Attacks Kharkiv

Washington has approved a $105 million deal to provide Ukraine with upgrades to its Patriot missile defense systems. The decision comes as Russia continues its military operations in eastern Ukraine, with recent attacks resulting in casualties in Kharkiv.

The US State Department has notified Congress of the proposed sale, which includes essential spare parts, training, and upgrades for the Patriot missile systems. These systems are crucial for Ukraine’s defense against incoming Russian missiles.

The Patriot system, a long-range, surface-to-air missile defense system developed by Raytheon, has been in service since 1985 and deployed in over 18 countries. It has seen action in major conflicts, including the Second Gulf War and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The approved deal will upgrade missile launchers from the M901 to the M903 configuration, enabling them to launch a greater number of missiles simultaneously. A statement from the State Department emphasized that the “proposed sale will improve Ukraine’s capability to meet current and future threats.”

Ukraine will bear the costs of these upgrades. This development occurs amidst ongoing debate in the United States regarding military aid to Ukraine, which has totaled approximately $67 billion since Russia’s invasion in February 2022.

Despite calls for a ceasefire, Russia has continued its offensive in Ukraine.

Concurrently with the US announcement, Russia launched drone attacks on Kharkiv, resulting in injuries to at least 32 people. The attacks, which occurred early Wednesday morning, marked the third consecutive night of Russian targeting of the city, according to the regional governor. Previous missile strikes in the region resulted in the deaths of at least four people, including a 17-year-old girl.

Oleh Syniehubov, the regional governor, reported a “massive attack on Kharkiv” involving at least “11 enemy drones.” The situation remains tense as both military and diplomatic efforts continue.
