Algiers – Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received Tobias Gotthardt, State Secretary of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy, and his accompanying delegation, at the ministry headquarters on Wednesday.
According to a ministry statement, discussions centered on bolstering Algerian-German bilateral relations in the fields of hydrocarbons, oil and gas industry, engineering, energy infrastructure, and equipment manufacturing, particularly those related to seawater desalination and the exploitation and processing of mineral resources.
The meeting also served as an opportunity to review the progress of the strategic energy partnership between Algeria and Germany, which has been in place for several years. Both parties expressed satisfaction with the advancements made in bilateral cooperation regarding hydrogen development, notably through the SoutH2 Corridor project and the Algerian-European Hydrogen Alliance ALTEH2A. They also welcomed the outcomes of the recent international meeting in Berlin, which showcased the progress of these strategic projects with the participation of a significant Algerian delegation.
“The two sides explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation through mutually beneficial partnership projects,” the statement continued, “including natural gas marketing, the adoption of low-carbon technologies in the oil and gas industry, the development, transport, and marketing of green hydrogen, and the manufacturing of related equipment such as electrolyzers.”
Furthermore, discussions included expanding cooperation in the exploitation and processing of mineral resources, particularly phosphate exploitation and processing, the production of phosphate fertilizers, training, technical assistance, the transfer of expertise, and capacity building.
During the talks, Minister Arkab emphasized Algeria’s strategic priority in developing a hydrogen economy, noting that the state is finalizing the legal and institutional framework to regulate this activity, aiming to attract further investments in hydrogen value chains and decarbonization. He underscored the importance of cooperation with Germany in modern technologies and advanced industrial experiences, valuing it within joint projects that benefit both parties.
The meeting also addressed prospects for cooperation between Algerian and German companies in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors.
