Algeria is actively supporting the strengthening of pharmaceutical supply chains across Africa, aiming to bolster the continent’s independence in the sector. This commitment aligns with the priorities of the African continent and addresses current challenges facing its healthcare systems.
The Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Kouideri, emphasized the importance of investing in African supply chains during his participation in the third edition of the African Forum on Strengthening the Supply Chain of Health Products, held in Djibouti from November 17th to 20th. He highlighted Algeria’s growing capabilities in pharmaceutical production.
Algeria is now capable of producing hundreds of pharmaceutical products, meeting a significant portion of its domestic market needs. Furthermore, the nation exports products that meet international standards to African, Arab, and European countries. This demonstrates Algeria’s commitment to quality and its potential as a regional pharmaceutical hub.
The Algerian pharmaceutical industry is evolving beyond traditional generic drugs. It now includes biosimilars, sterile injectables, anti-cancer medications, and other advanced pharmaceutical forms. This diversification strengthens Algeria’s capacity to address a wider range of healthcare needs both domestically and across the continent.
Minister Kouideri affirmed that Algeria is actively contributing to the enhancement of regional supply chains and reducing the continent’s external dependence. He stressed the country’s commitment to close collaboration with its African partners to promote pharmaceutical independence for the continent, support the reform of purchasing centers, and establish safer, more efficient, and more resilient African supply chains.
This initiative underscores Algeria’s dedication to fostering a self-sufficient and robust healthcare ecosystem in Africa. By strengthening local production and regional collaboration, Algeria aims to ensure access to essential medicines for all Africans.
