Algiers – Algeria is reinforcing its commitment to child welfare through a comprehensive legal framework designed to protect its 17 million children. This development reflects the nation’s ongoing efforts to prioritize and safeguard the rights of its youngest citizens.
Meryem Cherfi, President of the National Authority for the Protection and Promotion of Childhood, recently highlighted Algeria’s progress in child care. She emphasized that advancements in the legal structure surrounding children’s rights inspire confidence in the national system. Algeria was among the first nations to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the 2020 Constitution significantly expands protections for children, providing a solid foundation for related initiatives.
As the International Day of Children’s Rights approaches, Cherfi stressed that protecting minors is a shared responsibility between the state, society, and families. Awareness campaigns are planned in collaboration with the Ministries of Interior and Transport, including initiatives within metro stations and a dedicated “Children’s Train” to promote prevention and awareness of children’s rights.
With over 12 million children in education, childhood issues are central to the President’s programs and state social policies. The green number 11-11 serves as a crucial communication channel for reporting potential threats to children. Callers’ identities remain confidential, and reports can be made via call, voice recording, or video. Since independence, Algeria has implemented social measures to combat illiteracy, provide healthcare, and support orphans and children with disabilities. It has also prohibited child labor in degrading occupations, a legacy of the colonial era incompatible with human dignity and Algerian values.
Addressing the challenges of the digital age is also a key priority. Cherfi underscored the importance of protecting children from online threats, recognizing the need for proactive measures in an increasingly digital world. This commitment reflects Algeria’s dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of all its children, both online and offline.
