Algeria has conducted a major operation to destroy a vast quantity of illicit drugs seized across the country. The coordinated effort resulted in the destruction of over 13 tons of processed cannabis, more than 673 kilograms of cocaine, and in excess of 15 million psychotropic pills.
The destruction operations took place on Wednesday across multiple regions, specifically in Chlef (First Military Region), Tlemcen (Second Military Region), Bechar (Third Military Region), Biskra (Fourth Military Region), and Constantine (Fifth Military Region). Local and regional judicial and security authorities oversaw the procedures.
The drugs destroyed were collected from seizures made by various Algerian security forces, including the People’s National Army, the National Gendarmerie, the National Police, and the Customs services. These seizures represent the culmination of efforts to combat drug trafficking across the country.
The total weight of the destroyed drugs amounted to 13,584.794 kilograms of processed cannabis, 673.311 kilograms of cocaine, and 15,499,176 psychotropic pills. The operations were conducted under the supervision of regional committees responsible for drug and psychotropic substance destruction, led by representatives of the relevant judicial authority.
The process involved the transportation of all seized quantities from collection centers across the military regions. Judicial police representatives, including judicial authorities, the National Gendarmerie, and the National Police, weighed and inventoried the items. The drugs were then transported to designated facilities for incineration and destruction, following established legal procedures, safety protocols, and environmental protection measures.
This large-scale destruction underscores Algeria’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and its determination to protect its citizens from the harmful effects of illicit substances.
