Algeria Committed to Reforming African Peer Review Mechanism

Algiers, November 20, 2025 – Algeria has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the reform process of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Secretariat. The announcement came during the 11th session of the Steering Committee of Focal Points of the APRM, held virtually on Thursday.

The session was chaired by Salema Bakhta Mansouri, Secretary of State in charge of African Affairs, as part of Algeria’s current chairmanship of the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government.

According to a statement, the Secretary of State reiterated Algeria’s commitment, under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, the current Chairperson of the Forum, to bolstering the APRM Secretariat. Algeria views this reform as a crucial step towards enhancing the mechanism’s effectiveness and its role in promoting good governance across the African continent.

Mansouri emphasized the importance of considering the practical needs of the country review processes of member states. This is seen as vital to strengthening the principle of national ownership, which is at the heart of the APRM. She also stressed the necessity of ensuring that the Secretariat reform project aligns with the broader objectives of the APRM and the aspirations of its member states.

The APRM is a self-monitoring mechanism voluntarily adopted by African Union member states to promote good governance, socio-economic development, and political stability. The reform of the Secretariat is intended to improve its efficiency and effectiveness in supporting these objectives and ensuring that the APRM remains a relevant and impactful instrument for the continent.
