DZWatch Exclusive: Civil Protection services across Algeria responded to multiple incidents of carbon monoxide poisoning in a single day, resulting in ten individuals requiring medical attention. This comes amid growing concerns about the safety of heating appliances during the colder months.
According to a report released by the General Directorate of Civil Protection, a total of 2,560 interventions were carried out nationwide in the last 24 hours. This equates to an intervention occurring approximately every 33 seconds, highlighting the immense pressure on emergency services.
The report further detailed the incidents, stating that while no fatalities were recorded due to carbon monoxide poisoning, the ten cases are a stark reminder of the dangers posed by faulty or poorly ventilated heating systems. The Civil Protection services responded to four separate incidents related to carbon monoxide exposure.
In addition to carbon monoxide incidents, the Civil Protection also reported a significant number of road accidents. A total of 146 traffic accident interventions resulted in 178 injuries and, tragically, six fatalities. These figures underscore the ongoing challenges in road safety across the country.
Authorities are urging citizens to take preventative measures to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. These include ensuring proper ventilation for all heating appliances, regularly checking and maintaining gas systems, and installing carbon monoxide detectors in homes. DZWatch will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as they become available.
