Algeria Prioritizes Self-Sufficiency, Food Security

Johannesburg, South Africa – Algeria has placed self-sufficiency and food security at the forefront of its national priorities. This commitment was underscored at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, where Prime Minister Sifi Gherib, representing President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, addressed the assembly on Saturday.

Speaking during the second session, titled ‘A Resilient World – The G20 Contribution: Disaster Risk Reduction,’ the Prime Minister conveyed President Tebboune’s emphasis on the transformative changes Algeria has enacted within its food systems in recent years. These changes include agricultural development initiatives in the southern regions of the country and strategic partnerships with allied nations.

President Tebboune called upon G20 members to forge partnerships with African nations to bolster agricultural and livestock production. He argued that such collaborations are crucial in mitigating hunger and addressing the persistent food crises plaguing numerous African countries.

He highlighted Algeria’s collaborative efforts with the World Food Programme (WFP) in providing vital food support to affected nations, specifically referencing the Sahel region. He also noted the ongoing cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the agricultural sector. President Tebboune emphasized that the sharing of expertise has already facilitated significant advancements in agricultural systems.

Turning to the energy sector, the President acknowledged the substantial challenges facing Africa. He pointed out that while the continent accounts for 18 percent of the global population, it represents less than 6 percent of global energy consumption, with electricity access rates not exceeding 45 percent. President Tebboune also stressed the importance of combating climate change and aggressively reducing emissions, with a particular focus on the energy sector.

President Tebboune reiterated Algeria’s call for partnerships in the field of energy transition across the African continent, urging collaboration between African countries and G20 member states.These partnerships are seen as essential for sustainable development and economic growth.
