Seville, Spain – Municipal councils in Seville reaffirmed their unwavering support for the Sahrawi people during a meeting of municipalities in solidarity with the Sahrawi cause. The event, hosted by the Mairena del Alcor municipality on November 24, 2025, highlighted the ongoing political and humanitarian assistance provided to the Sahrawi people.
Political representatives, activists, and Sahrawi delegates attended the meeting, emphasizing the crucial role of Spanish municipalities in supporting the Sahrawi population. The gathering marked 50 years since Spain’s withdrawal from Western Sahara and Morocco’s subsequent occupation of the territory.
Mayor Juanma López stressed that municipalities serve as a vital force in advocating for a just resolution to the Sahrawi issue. He underscored the importance of sustained solidarity to ensure the Sahrawi people can one day live in a free Sahara.
Representatives from support organizations like ALFARHA and AAPSS highlighted the continuation of programs such as ‘Holidays in Peace,’ which hosts Sahrawi children in Spanish families during the summer. These initiatives represent a cornerstone of tangible solidarity with the Sahrawi refugee camps.
Several municipalities in Seville presented projects implemented in the Sahrawi camps, focusing on improving educational and healthcare infrastructure, as well as organizing humanitarian aid convoys. The open forum allowed participating municipalities to share experiences on practical initiatives, including:
- Adopting official resolutions supporting Sahrawi self-determination in local councils.
- Regular field visits to the camps to foster direct engagement with the Sahrawi people.
- Funding development projects through the Seville province.
- Solidarity programs such as ‘Holidays in Peace’ and ‘Peace Caravan.’
Participants noted that Spanish municipalities have played a vital role in promoting popular solidarity and grassroots diplomacy, independent of the central government’s fluctuating policies. This has established the municipalities as a fundamental pillar of support for the Sahrawi people and the protection of their legitimate rights.
Mohamed Salem Daha, representative of the Polisario Front in Andalusia, expressed gratitude for the municipalities’ role in strengthening solidarity. He emphasized the importance of continued support in the face of ongoing challenges.
