UGTA Orders Halt to New Union Coordinations Nationwide

Algiers, November 24, 2025 – The General Union of Algerian Workers (UGTA) has issued a directive effectively banning the creation of new union coordinations across most sectors. The decision, outlined in a statement released earlier today, also mandates the dissolution of all currently existing coordinations.

The UGTA justifies this move by citing numerous violations of the organization’s internal structure, fundamental laws, and operational regulations. The statement alleges that these coordinations lack a legal basis for their formation, are incompatible with the UGTA’s established organizational framework, and negatively impact the overall efficiency of union operations.

Specifically, the directive states that exceptions to this ban will only be considered in specific cases within the education and healthcare sectors. The UGTA maintains that these two sectors require a unique approach to address their particular needs.

The directive urges all vertical and horizontal union structures to adhere strictly to the new regulations. It emphasizes that all coordinations, with the aforementioned exceptions, are now considered illegal and their operations are prohibited. The UGTA leadership believes this action is necessary to streamline union activities and ensure compliance with established protocols.

This decision is likely to spark debate among union members and observers, as it potentially limits the scope for grassroots organization and independent advocacy within the labor movement. The long-term impact of this directive on labor relations in Algeria remains to be seen.
