Algeria-Spain: New Maritime Trade Route Set to Launch

Skikda, Algeria – A new weekly maritime trade route connecting the Algerian port of Skikda and Valencia, Spain is set to commence operations in January 2026. The Skikda Port Authority announced the initiative as part of a broader effort to expand maritime trade activities in Algeria.

According to a statement released by the Port Authority, a working session was held on Tuesday at its headquarters. The session brought together officials from the Authority and representatives from the Spanish shipping company “Marquiza,” represented by the global shipping firm “H.M.M.” Discussions focused on coordinating the organizational aspects related to the launch of a regular container shipping route between Valencia and Skikda.

The new line is expected to begin service in January 2026, with one voyage per week. This development aims to solidify Skikda’s position as a strategic logistics hub in the Mediterranean. The shipping company revealed that the regular route will be operated by two dedicated container vessels. This will ensure a direct and rapid connection between Mediterranean ports, with a particular focus on Skikda in eastern Algeria, establishing it as a key regional logistics gateway.

The project is part of Algeria’s expansion of maritime trade activities. This follows successful trial runs conducted by the company at the port of Skikda. These trials demonstrated the efficiency of loading and unloading operations, reduced vessel turnaround times, the readiness of human and technical resources, and the modern equipment recently acquired by the Authority. The ongoing expansion of the container terminal will further increase the port’s capacity.

This new trade route is expected to boost economic ties between Algeria and Spain, facilitating the movement of goods and strengthening regional trade networks.
