Major Migrant Smuggling and Drug Trafficking Ring Busted

Algiers, Algeria – A large-scale organized criminal network involved in migrant smuggling and drug trafficking has been dismantled in a major operation this week, according to sources within the National Police. The Central Service for Combating Organized Crime led the operation, resulting in the arrest of 36 key members of the criminal enterprise.

The investigation, which spanned over six months, revealed a sophisticated criminal methodology. The network allegedly used a luxury car rental business as a front to conceal the origins of their illicit funds and launder the proceeds of their illegal activities. This allowed them to operate under the guise of legitimate business, hindering detection by authorities.

During the operation, authorities seized a significant cache of assets, including a firearm, specifically a pistol, four large sea vessels equipped with powerful engines and maritime equipment, twenty-two luxury vehicles, and two motorcycles. In addition, law enforcement confiscated approximately 300 million Algerian dinars and 6,000 euros in foreign currency. Three signal flares and three GPS tracking devices were also recovered.

DZWatch has learned that those apprehended have been presented before the specialized penal division in Sidi M’Hamed, Algiers, where they will face legal proceedings. The authorities are committed to pursuing justice and ensuring that those involved are held accountable for their crimes.

This successful operation underscores the dedication of Algerian law enforcement in combating organized crime and protecting the nation’s borders. The fight against migrant smuggling and drug trafficking remains a top priority.
