Algiers – A nationwide polio vaccination campaign has commenced across Algeria, targeting children aged between two months and five years. The initiative, spearheaded by national health authorities, aims to bolster immunity against the disease following the recent isolated cases detected after decades of absence in the country.
The campaign is structured in three distinct phases. The first phase is currently underway, running from November 30th to December 6th. A second round of vaccinations is scheduled for December 21st to 27th. The final phase, administering the injectable VPI vaccine, will take place between January 25th and 31st, 2026.
Dr. Wafa Al-Akhras, a general practitioner at the El-Anasser polyclinic in Kouba, clarified that the vaccines administered during this campaign are oral drops. She emphasized that children over the age of five are not included in this campaign, as they have already received their routine doses through the national health program.
Dr. Al-Akhras reassured parents about the safety and reliability of the polio vaccine. She stated that it does not typically cause fever or other concerning side effects, adding that children’s bodies generally respond well to the dosage without complications.
Health officials emphasize the critical importance of participating in the campaign to safeguard the health of young children and ensure a safe and healthy environment for future generations. The resurgence of polio cases, even in isolated instances, underscores the need for proactive measures. Vaccination centers across the country are now open and administering the vaccine as part of this vital national effort.
