Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny has confirmed that head coach Hansi Flick has granted him permission to smoke, albeit under a specific condition related to performance and discipline. The Polish international is known for his penchant for cigars, having been seen on several occasions smoking in the locker room, raising questions about the club’s tolerance of the habit.
In an interview, Szczęsny revealed details of a conversation he had with Flick. “I was with the coach in the sauna and asked him if my image as a smoker was becoming a burden on the club,” Szczęsny stated.
“He replied that the most important thing for him was my performance in training and matches. He said that as long as I am professional in my work, I can smoke even during championship victory celebrations,” the goalkeeper added.
Szczęsny, 35, was indeed seen smoking a cigar during Barcelona’s La Liga title celebrations last May. However, his role in the team has diminished this season, with only nine appearances as he has fallen behind teammate Joan Garcia in the pecking order.
The agreement highlights a unique approach to player management under the new Barcelona coach. It remains to be seen whether this arrangement will impact Szczęsny’s future at the club.
