Algeria and Tunisia Forge Closer Ties for Border Development

El Tarf, Algeria – Enhanced cooperation between the Algerian province of El Tarf and the Tunisian province of Jendouba was the central focus of a meeting held Wednesday, aimed at fostering development in border regions and boosting cross-border trade. The meeting brought together the governors of both provinces, Mohamed Meziane of El Tarf and Tayeb Dridi of Jendouba, at the provincial headquarters in El Tarf.

According to sources within the El Tarf provincial government, the discussions fall under the framework of strengthening bilateral relations between Algeria and Tunisia. Key topics included an assessment of the progress made by the joint steering committee within the Aid for Trade Initiative for Arab States (AfTIAS 2.0) program. This initiative is designed to monitor a study focused on economic development and the promotion of cross-border trade between the two provinces.

The meeting also addressed the development of economic exchanges, the promotion of joint projects in trade and investment, and discussions on streamlining movement across border crossings for citizens of both countries. These efforts aim to facilitate smoother trade and travel between the two nations.

Furthermore, the discussions centered on evaluating the progress of a study related to trade and economic promotion between Algeria and Tunisia. The ultimate goal is to achieve economic integration between the two countries by creating sustainable employment opportunities in the border regions and diversifying exports beyond hydrocarbons.

Provincial authorities indicated that the study, currently in its final stages, is expected to yield significant results, particularly concerning trade exchanges between El Tarf and Jendouba. This collaborative effort underscores the commitment of both Algeria and Tunisia to fostering economic growth and stability in their shared border regions.
