Algiers – National team coach Madjid Bougherra has defended his tactical choices, particularly the inclusion of veteran striker Islam Slimani in the squad. Dismissing claims that Slimani’s selection was merely a sentimental gesture, Bougherra emphasized the forward’s crucial role and experience within the team.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the match against Bahrain, Bougherra described Slimani as a valuable tactical asset. “Slimani isn’t a gift,” Bougherra stated. “He’s a trump card, capable of shifting the balance of any match.” He highlighted Slimani’s ability to read the game and make decisive contributions during critical moments.
Bougherra explained that Slimani’s integration into the competition is based on technical and physical considerations. Like his teammates, Slimani is expected to adapt to the rhythm and demands of the tournament. Bougherra expressed confidence that Algerian fans recognize Slimani’s value and his long history with the national team.
Addressing criticism following the match against Sudan, Bougherra acknowledged the fans’ frustration and admitted to shortcomings in the team’s performance. He mentioned that some players were dealing with minor injuries but assured that the team is prepared to deliver an improved performance.
The coach stressed the importance of focus and tactical intelligence in the tournament, emphasizing the crucial role of mental preparation. He affirmed that the team is approaching the Bahrain match with a strong determination to get back on track.
Bougherra also addressed Adam Ounas’s dismissal, clarifying that while the player made a mistake, his position within the team remains secure, and the squad remains united despite the pressure. Bougherra concluded by stating that criticism has always been a part of his career, dating back to his early playing days between 2004 and 2008, and that he has learned to deal with it pragmatically, unaffected by the influence of social media, which was not prevalent at the time.
