Algerian Army Thwarts Major Drug Smuggling Attempts at Moroccan Border

Algiers – Joint detachments of the People’s National Army (ANP), in coordination with various security services, successfully thwarted several attempts to smuggle over 400 kilograms of processed cannabis across the border with Morocco last week. The operations, conducted across various military districts, also resulted in the seizure of more than one million psychotropic tablets, according to an operational report released by the ANP today.

The report highlights the continued vigilance and effectiveness of Algerian security forces in combating drug trafficking along its western border. The ANP’s coordinated efforts with other security agencies demonstrate a commitment to safeguarding national security and protecting Algerian citizens from the harmful effects of illegal substances.

DZWatch has consistently reported on the ongoing efforts of the Algerian army to secure its borders and combat various forms of organized crime, including drug smuggling. This latest success underscores the persistent challenges faced by Algerian authorities in controlling the flow of illicit goods across its extensive borders.

The large quantity of drugs seized indicates a significant attempt to introduce these substances into the Algerian market. Security analysts suggest that the ongoing instability in the Sahel region and the porous nature of the border contribute to the persistent threat of drug trafficking.

The People’s National Army reaffirms its unwavering commitment to combating all forms of organized crime and securing the nation’s borders, ensuring the safety and security of the Algerian people. The seized narcotics have been handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
