Algiers – Minister of Religious Affairs and Endowments, Youcef Belmahdi, presided over the periodic meeting of the Ministerial Fatwa Committee held today in Algiers. The meeting, themed “Fatwa and Digital Challenges in the Modern Era,” focused on the crucial role of religious scholars and imams in safeguarding the national religious authority against attempts to undermine it.
The discussions centered on the increasing influence of digital platforms and the challenges they pose to traditional religious interpretations. Participants emphasized the need for proactive engagement with digital media to disseminate accurate and reliable religious guidance, particularly in response to misinformation and extremist ideologies.
Minister Belmahdi highlighted the importance of adapting fatwas to address contemporary issues while remaining firmly rooted in established Islamic principles. He stressed the necessity of providing clear and accessible religious rulings that resonate with the public, especially the younger generation who are heavily influenced by online content.
“Our scholars and imams bear a significant responsibility in navigating the complexities of the digital age,” Minister Belmahdi stated. “They must equip themselves with the necessary tools and knowledge to effectively counter harmful narratives and promote a balanced understanding of Islam.”
The committee explored various strategies for enhancing digital literacy among religious leaders and developing online resources that provide credible religious information. The meeting concluded with a call for greater collaboration between religious institutions, academic researchers, and technology experts to address the challenges posed by the digital landscape and ensure the preservation of the national religious identity.
