Algeria Celebrates Literary Excellence with Inaugural Presidential Prize

Algiers, Algeria – The inaugural Presidential Prize for Literature and the Arabic Language was awarded in a prestigious ceremony held at the Abdelatif Rahal International Conference Center today. Prime Minister Sifi Ghrib presided over the event, which coincided with the celebration of International Arabic Language Day, underscoring Algeria’s commitment to the promotion and preservation of the Arabic language.

The ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including members of the government, Professor Salah Belaid, President of the Higher Council of the Arabic Language, Sheikh Muhammad al-Ma’mun al-Qasimi al-Hassani, Dean of the Grand Mosque of Algiers, as well as university professors, researchers, intellectuals, and representatives from the literary and scientific communities.

The Presidential Prize aims to bolster the use of Arabic across various sectors, including administration, education, scientific research, culture, and technology. It also seeks to encourage literary creativity, academic research, and translation, ultimately contributing to the enrichment of national knowledge production and the elevation of the Arabic language’s standing.

In the category of Scientific Research and Development of the Arabic Language, Seddik Boutiouata received the first prize for his work, “Glossary of Satellite Terms and Definitions,” recognizing his contribution to the localization of scientific terminology. Lakhdar Far secured the second prize for his research specializing in the preparation of a dictionary for the construction, public works, and irrigation sector. The third prize was awarded to Ali Kashroud for his book, “Guide to the Rules of Spelling.”

In the field of Literature and Creativity, Nana Baba Hani won the first prize in the novel category for her work, “Al-Nayyiriyya.” Fatima Gharbi received the second prize in the poetry category for her poem, “Daughters of the Steeds.” Hafidha Mimi was awarded the third prize in the short story category for her collection, “Forbidden to Throw Gametes.”

The launch of this prize reflects the Algerian state’s cultural policy aimed at strengthening the Arabic language as a fundamental component of national identity, a catalyst for knowledge and scientific research, and a vibrant space for literary creativity. This initiative is expected to further solidify Arabic’s role in Algeria’s cultural and intellectual landscape.
