Algiers – The proposed amendment to the citizenship law contains sufficient safeguards to regulate the stripping of nationality, according to Justice Minister and Keeper of the Seals, Mr. Lotfi Boujamaa. The Minister made the remarks Sunday in Algiers, emphasizing that the amendment clearly defines the specific circumstances that could lead to such a measure.

The Minister’s statement aims to address concerns surrounding the proposed changes and assure the public that the law will be applied judiciously and with due process. He stressed that the amendment seeks to strike a balance between protecting national security and upholding individual rights.

“The proposed amendments are carefully crafted to ensure that any decision to strip someone of their citizenship is taken with utmost care and only in cases where there is a clear and present danger to the nation,” Minister Boujamaa stated. He further explained that the legislation includes provisions for appeal and judicial oversight, guaranteeing that individuals affected by such decisions have the opportunity to challenge them in a court of law.

The amendment has been a subject of intense debate in recent weeks, with some critics expressing concerns about potential abuses and the erosion of fundamental rights. However, government officials maintain that the changes are necessary to address evolving security threats and to prevent individuals engaged in terrorism or other serious crimes from exploiting Algerian citizenship. The Ministry of Justice is expected to release further details about the specific safeguards included in the amendment in the coming days.
