New Head Appointed to Algeria’s Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission

The Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjjal, today presided over the installation ceremony of Baya Chekired as the new head of the Electricity and Gas Regulatory Commission (CREG). Chekired succeeds Wassila Atemine in this role, marking a move aimed at strengthening institutional performance and reinforcing principles of good governance within the energy sector.

During the installation ceremony, held at the ministry headquarters and attended by heads and officials from various sector bodies, Minister Adjjal emphasized the pivotal role of CREG. He described it as a cornerstone in regulating the energy sector, a strategic and vital domain directly impacting economic development, the quality of public service, and the security of energy supply.

The Minister also highlighted CREG’s significant progress since its establishment on January 24, 2005, particularly in regulating and monitoring the electricity and gas market. He noted its achievements in promoting competition and transparency through the consolidation of the sector’s legal and regulatory framework.

Minister Adjjal acknowledged the efforts of the outgoing head of CREG. He stated that the appointment of Baya Chekired aligns with the new vision for the sector and embodies the roadmap being implemented by the Ministry of Energy and Renewable Energies. This roadmap aims to inject new dynamism into its affiliated entities and enhance their effectiveness, enabling them to perform their regulatory and supervisory functions more efficiently.
