US Eyes Mining Investments in Algeria, Collaboration on the Horizon

Algiers, December 23, 2025 – The United States is showing significant interest in investing in Algeria’s burgeoning mining sector, signaling a potential boost for the North African nation’s economy.

Redha Belhadj, Director General of the SONAREM Group, held discussions with Debra K. Martin, Commercial Counselor at the US Embassy in Algeria, on Monday, outlining plans for a series of video conferences starting in January 2026. These virtual meetings aim to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between Algerian and American entities keen on exploring opportunities within the Algerian mining market.

The meeting, held at SONAREM headquarters, served as a platform to discuss prospects for cooperation, investment, and partnerships in the mining sector. Key areas of focus included exploration, exploitation, and the valorization of mineral resources. Furthermore, discussions revolved around the development of projects leveraging cutting-edge technologies and related infrastructure, all geared towards enhancing productivity and technical efficiency.

Both parties explored avenues for strengthening bilateral cooperation across the mining sector’s value chains, with particular emphasis on the exploitation and transformation of mineral resources, research, and knowledge sharing. Training, administrative organization, and skills development were also highlighted as crucial areas for collaboration.

Belhadj presented SONAREM’s vision and plans for developing Algeria’s mining sector, showcasing ongoing projects, investment opportunities, and future strategies for technology transfer, especially within the framework of the new mining law.

Debra K. Martin provided an overview of the tools and support mechanisms available to facilitate communication between American and Algerian companies. She emphasized the importance of fostering sustainable partnerships and investment projects in the sector. This increased interest from the US represents a significant opportunity for Algeria’s economic growth and diversification.

The discussions pave the way for a deeper and more productive relationship between the two countries in the critical mining sector.
