Algeria and Tunisia Strengthen Military Cooperation

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria and Tunisia have reaffirmed their commitment to bolstering military cooperation in the face of shared security threats. The announcement followed a high-level meeting in Algiers between senior military officials from both nations.

The Secretary-General of the Algerian Ministry of National Defense, Mohamed Salah Benbicha, received the Chief of Staff of the Tunisian Land Army, Major General Mohamed El Ghoul, and his accompanying delegation on Wednesday in Algiers. The meeting coincided with Algeria hosting the 19th session of the Algerian-Tunisian Joint Committee. This committee is responsible for monitoring and overseeing the implementation of military cooperation agreements between the two countries; its current session runs from December 21st to 25th, 2025.

During the bilateral talks, which were also attended by the Chief of Staff of the Algerian Land Forces and the Director of External Relations and Cooperation at the Algerian Ministry of Defense, both sides discussed areas of mutual interest and concern. Both parties lauded the “distinct and high-quality level” of cooperation between their respective armed forces.

Secretary-General Benbicha highlighted the “positive results” achieved through ongoing military collaboration. He emphasized the importance of “continuous and intensified coordination between the two countries to confront various security threats.” This cooperation, he noted, includes securing the shared border to mitigate the risks of terrorism, transnational organized crime, illegal immigration, smuggling, and drug trafficking.

The enhanced collaboration underscores the commitment of both Algeria and Tunisia to regional stability and security in the face of evolving challenges.
