Algiers – A nationwide campaign to clean and beautify primary schools and their surroundings has been launched, signaling a concerted effort to improve the learning environment for young students across the country.
The Ministry of National Education, through its General Secretary, has formally instructed regional education directors to initiate the campaign. This initiative aims to enhance the overall school environment and improve the conditions in which students learn.
This campaign is timed to prepare educational institutions for the return of students for the second term of the academic year and to coincide with the start of the new year. The Ministry of National Education is collaborating with the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, the Ministry of Environment, and the National Observatory of Civil Society to execute this ambitious project. The campaign, themed “For a Clean School Environment,” will run from December 27th to December 31st, 2025.
Education directors have been instructed to direct primary school principals to actively participate in the campaign. Principals are expected to work closely with municipal leaders, environmental agencies, members of the National Observatory of Civil Society, and local volunteer organizations, including parent-teacher associations.
The cleaning aspect of the campaign includes: thorough cleaning of all school facilities, with particular attention to cafeterias, kitchens, dormitories, and playgrounds; rigorous cleaning and disinfection of restrooms in accordance with health and hygiene standards; maintenance of restrooms and sewage systems; removal and disposal of all types of waste from within and around school premises; purification of water tanks and reservoirs; and elimination of any sources of pollution that could contribute to the spread of communicable diseases.
The beautification aspect of the campaign focuses on: painting school walls with colors inspired by nature to create a stimulating learning environment for students; and encouraging students from nearby schools to participate in artistic projects.
