Algiers – A joint statement issued today expresses the widespread condemnation from Arab and Islamic nations regarding Israel’s recent recognition of Somaliland. The statement, backed by numerous foreign ministers and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), warns of severe repercussions for regional security.
The foreign ministers of Algeria, Egypt, Comoros, Djibouti, Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Turkey, and Yemen, have collectively rejected Israel’s declaration of recognition of Somaliland, a region within the Federal Republic of Somalia. The announcement from Israel, made on December 26, 2025, has been met with strong opposition.
The joint statement emphasizes the potentially dangerous and unprecedented consequences of this decision for peace and security in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. Furthermore, it highlights the negative impact this move could have on international peace and security as a whole.
According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, the statement asserts that Israel’s action demonstrates a blatant disregard for international law and its principles. The recognition is viewed as a clear violation of the United Nations Charter, which mandates respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of nations.
The foreign ministers reiterated their unwavering support for the sovereignty of the Federal Republic of Somalia and firmly rejected any actions that could undermine Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity, or sovereignty over its national territory. They cautioned that recognizing the independence of parts of a country sets a dangerous precedent and poses a direct threat to the international order, which is based on respect for national sovereignty and the established principles of international law and the UN Charter.
The statement concludes by unequivocally rejecting any attempt to link this action to plans to displace the Palestinian people from their land. Such proposals are unacceptable in both form and substance and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.
The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also endorsed this statement.
