Fishing Vessel License Suspended for Illegal Fishing in Algeria

Algiers – The General Directorate of Fisheries and Aquaculture has taken decisive action by suspending the fishing license of a vessel operating out of Chlef province. This action follows the vessel’s violation of restricted fishing zones off the coast of Mostaganem, signaling a strengthened commitment to protecting marine resources and the coastal environment.

The Directorate announced in a statement today that the decision was prompted by the circulation of video footage on social media platforms. The videos allegedly showed several trawlers operating close to the shoreline, in direct contravention of established fishing regulations.

In response, immediate instructions were issued to local fisheries and aquaculture authorities to launch a thorough field investigation. The investigation identified the vessel “A.A-1,” registered in Chlef, as being involved in illegal fishing within prohibited areas off the coast of Mostaganem.

According to the statement, a detailed report prepared by the fisheries and aquaculture inspector in Mostaganem prompted the Directorate in Chlef to initiate a supplementary investigation. This further inquiry revealed previous violations associated with the same vessel.

Consequently, the fishing license for the implicated vessel has been immediately suspended, and all applicable legal procedures are being initiated, the source confirmed.

Furthermore, the General Directorate announced the launch of a second investigation, in coordination between the fisheries and aquaculture directorates of Algiers and Tipaza provinces, to examine similar incidents of fishing within restricted zones.

The Directorate emphasized that such violations, in addition to administrative penalties, could lead to criminal prosecution under existing legislation, stressing that the protection of fish stocks is a non-negotiable priority. It also called for increased inspection patrols across various fishing ports and landing sites in all coastal provinces and enhanced coordination with the National Coast Guard, acknowledging its crucial role in monitoring and protecting fishing areas.
