Caracas, Venezuela – The Venezuelan government has declared a state of emergency following a series of strikes in and around the capital city of Caracas. The announcement was made by the Foreign Minister, citing the need for heightened security measures in response to the unfolding situation.
Reports from Caracas indicate a tense atmosphere, with residents reporting the sounds of explosions and military aircraft overhead. Witnesses described plumes of smoke rising from various locations within the city, suggesting multiple points of impact. Initial reports indicate that the attacks may have been carried out via airstrikes.
Venezuelan media outlets are also reporting explosions at the port of La Guaira in Vargas state, the nation’s largest seaport, as well as along the coast and in the city of Higuerote. Targets reportedly include Higuerote airport, the La Carlota airbase, and the Fuerte Tiuna military complex.
There has been no immediate official comment from the Venezuelan authorities regarding the specific nature of the attacks or the extent of the damage. Power outages have been reported in areas near a military base south of the capital. DZWatch is continuing to monitor the situation and will provide updates as they become available.
The declaration of a state of emergency comes amid heightened tensions between Venezuela and the United States. President Nicolás Maduro had recently expressed a willingness to negotiate with the U.S. on various issues, including drug trafficking, oil, and economic agreements. The U.S. has maintained pressure on Caracas for months, accusing Maduro of leading a vast drug trafficking network.
