New York – Somalia has officially assumed the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of January. This marks a significant diplomatic milestone for the nation, highlighting its strengthened position on the international stage.
The Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement emphasizing the country’s commitment to upholding global peace and security during its tenure. Somalia aims to play a constructive leadership role within the UN, fostering dialogue and cooperation among member states.
Throughout January, Somalia will preside over both regular and emergency sessions of the Security Council. This includes leading discussions on pressing issues related to international peace and security, managing the agenda, and facilitating deliberations among the Council’s members.
The Security Council comprises 15 nations, each holding one vote. Five permanent members – Russia, France, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States – possess veto power.
