UN Security Council to Convene Emergency Session on Venezuela

New York – The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency session Monday to address the recent military operation conducted by the United States in Venezuela. The operation resulted in the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in Caracas, the nation’s capital.

Khadija Ahmed, spokesperson for the Permanent Mission of Somalia to the United Nations, stated that Somalia, holding the rotating presidency of the Council for January, has scheduled the emergency meeting for 10:00 AM New York time (3:00 PM GMT) on Monday.

The request for the emergency session was initiated by Venezuela and conveyed through Colombia, which currently holds a non-permanent seat on the Council. The meeting comes amid escalating regional and international tensions following the surprise U.S. military action, which has triggered widespread diplomatic reactions.

Reports indicate that Nicolas Maduro and his wife were apprehended and transported out of the country by U.S. forces on Saturday. Media outlets, citing statements attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump, reported a large-scale operation within Venezuela preceded the arrest. The situation continues to unfold as the Security Council prepares to deliberate on the matter.
