Bank of Algeria Eases Restrictions on Business Account Funding

Algiers, January 5, 2026 – The Bank of Algeria has issued a new directive permitting the funding of commercial accounts through both documentary payment methods and cash deposits, based on daily and/or weekly business volume. This move represents a significant shift in policy, potentially easing operational burdens for businesses across the country.

According to the Bank of Algeria’s memo, due diligence measures concerning customers will be implemented using a risk-based approach, consistent with practices prior to the issuance of memo number 02 MCMC/2025, dated December 22, 2025. This suggests a return to a more flexible system for businesses managing their finances.

The memo explicitly states that commercial accounts can be funded via documentary payment methods or cash, contingent on the daily and/or weekly business activity. The central bank emphasized that all transactions must align with the customer’s profile and be consistent with the information already held by the bank. This is to ensure compliance and prevent any illicit activities.

The new directive effectively rescinds and replaces memo number 02 MCMC/2025, dated December 22, 2025. The previous memo had reportedly created difficulties for businesses, particularly those relying on cash transactions. The move is expected to be welcomed by the business community, offering greater flexibility in managing their accounts and facilitating smoother day-to-day operations. DZWatch will continue to monitor the impact of this policy change on the Algerian economy.
