Algeria Leads Globally in Fuel Affordability Despite Adjustments

Algiers – Algeria continues to rank among the nations with the lowest fuel prices worldwide, even when compared to other oil-producing countries. This is largely attributable to the government’s significant annual investment in public subsidies.

Current data indicates that the price of gasoline in Algeria is approximately 47 Algerian dinars per liter, equivalent to around $0.36 USD. Diesel fuel is even more affordable, at just 31 dinars ($0.25 USD) per liter. Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is priced at a mere 12 dinars per liter, or about $0.09 USD.

International comparisons reveal that gasoline prices in Algeria are nearly half those of major oil-producing nations like Saudi Arabia, Russia, and the United States. In these countries, the price per liter often exceeds $0.60 USD, and in some markets, it can surpass $0.80 USD.

Similarly, diesel fuel in Algeria is among the cheapest globally, costing three to four times less than in other oil-producing countries, including the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.

Algeria boasts the lowest LPG prices worldwide, selling it at less than a quarter of the price in many other oil-producing nations. This reflects the substantial subsidies allocated to this fuel, positioning it as an economical and environmentally friendly alternative.

Fuel prices in Algeria were adjusted at the beginning of 2026. Gasoline saw a slight increase to 47 dinars per liter, while diesel rose to 31 dinars. The price of LPG was also adjusted to 12 dinars per liter.

The Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines stated that these adjustments are part of the application of existing legislative and regulatory texts, designed to ensure continued supply and cover the increasing costs of production, refining, transportation, and distribution. The ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining affordable fuel prices for the Algerian people while ensuring the sustainability of the energy sector.
