Algiers – The national university cross-country championship commenced today at the 5 Juillet Olympic Complex, marking a significant event in Algerian university sports. The Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Kamal Baddari, inaugurated the competition, highlighting the growing importance of sports within the academic community.
The championship witnessed the participation of 34 universities from across the country, bringing together approximately 200 students in a display of athletic prowess. This substantial involvement reflects the burgeoning sports scene within Algerian universities, with institutions actively encouraging students to balance their academic pursuits with physical activity.
This year’s national championship serves as a qualifying event for the World University Cross Country Championship in Italy. It is a crucial opportunity to identify and select the most talented university athletes who will represent Algeria on the international stage, further solidifying Algeria’s presence in global university competitions.
According to the Ministry, the top 12 athletes from this championship will qualify for the World Championship in Italy next March. This achievement underscores the high level of competition within Algerian university sports and demonstrates the effectiveness of programs aimed at discovering and developing young athletic talent.
