Colombia’s President Urges Venezuela De-escalation Amid US Tensions

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has voiced concerns regarding the potential for instability in Venezuela, following a period of heightened tension with the United States. Petro emphasized the critical need for dialogue and peaceful resolution to avoid further turmoil in the region.

His remarks come after a week of increased scrutiny on Venezuela, and amid ongoing discussions regarding drug policy and regional security. Petro acknowledged the potential ramifications of a breakdown in cooperation with the United States on counter-narcotics efforts, stressing the importance of maintaining open communication channels.

“It’s imperative that we avoid a spiral of violence,” Petro stated, highlighting the necessity for inclusive dialogue among all political factions in Venezuela. He advocated for free and fair elections that empower the Venezuelan people to determine their own future.

President Petro also addressed the strained relationship between Colombia and the United States, noting a previous lack of formal communication channels. “The absence of official dialogue,” he explained, “contributed to escalating disagreements, particularly concerning counter-narcotics strategies.”

Despite existing challenges, Petro affirmed Colombia’s commitment to continued collaboration with the United States in combating drug trafficking. He emphasized that maintaining this cooperation is vital, despite ideological differences. “We are fully aware of the consequences of failing to work together on this critical issue,” Petro stated.

Previously, President Petro called for Latin American nations to unite in a joint effort to combat drug cartels, arguing that the United States has historically used these organizations as a pretext for intervention in the region. He asserted the need to remove any justification for external interference, emphasizing that regional cooperation is essential for the stability and well-being of all Latin American countries.
