Algeria Unveils 2026 Roadmap for Agricultural Sector Boost

Algeria is charting a course for its agricultural sector with a comprehensive roadmap aimed at significantly increasing production and reducing reliance on imports by 2026. The plan, spearheaded by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, prioritizes maximizing yield per hectare and modernizing agricultural practices across the country.

The government is committed to providing the necessary resources and creating favorable conditions to enhance grain production. This includes adopting scientific methodologies at every stage of cultivation, guided by a comprehensive strategy involving agricultural experts and engineers. The focus will be on selecting optimal seed varieties tailored to the specific characteristics of each region and its soil composition.

A key component of the roadmap is the revision of the agricultural orientation law, encompassing mechanisms for regulating and controlling agricultural output. The overarching goal is to decrease imports without causing any market shortages. To achieve this, the government plans to encourage the establishment of specialized cooperatives, supported by ongoing state incentives.

President Tebboune has also directed the Minister of Agriculture to find immediate solutions to revitalize red and white meat production to meet domestic demand. This will involve close collaboration with producers and breeders. The principle that land belongs to those who cultivate it remains central to the government’s approach. The state is committed to resolving land tenure issues for agricultural actors and ensuring optimal production levels.

Looking ahead to the 2025-2026 planting season, President Tebboune has set a target of expanding the cultivated agricultural area to 3 million hectares. Furthermore, he emphasized the urgent need to import harvesting equipment, particularly for grain, corn, and sunflower crops. This strategic investment aims to ensure efficient harvesting and minimize post-harvest losses, contributing to the overall success of Algeria’s agricultural ambitions.

The roadmap represents a significant step towards achieving food security and economic diversification in Algeria. By embracing innovation, supporting local farmers, and streamlining agricultural practices, the country aims to unlock the full potential of its agricultural sector.
