DZWatch has learned that Algeria’s national team coach, Vladimir Petkovic, has reportedly expressed strong dissatisfaction with the refereeing standards observed during the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), suggesting he may reconsider his position if the situation doesn’t improve.
According to various reports, Petkovic allegedly described the officiating as a “sham” and something he found difficult to comprehend. He is quoted as saying to FA president Walid Sadi: “What happened is unbelievable. Frankly, in my coaching career, I have never witnessed refereeing like this.”
“If these farcical refereeing decisions continue at this level of African football, in major tournaments, and no one addresses the issue, then I cannot continue working at the level of the CAF. In fact, I can’t work with this confederation,” Petkovic reportedly added.
These alleged comments come amidst widespread criticism of African refereeing from players, coaches, and fans alike. There’s a growing wave of anger regarding the perceived low standards of officiating across the continent.
The coach’s frustration highlights a deeper concern about the integrity of the game in Africa. The future of Petkovic’s tenure with the Algerian national team may depend on whether CAF takes concrete steps to address these concerns. This situation will be closely monitored by DZWatch.
