National Campaign Launched to Fortify Southern Power Grids

Algiers, January 13, 2026 – A nationwide initiative to overhaul and reinforce electrical infrastructure has been launched by Sonelgaz, the national electricity and gas company. The campaign focuses on bolstering the resilience of the power grid in the southern regions of Algeria, ensuring uninterrupted and high-quality service for residents and businesses.

According to a statement released by Sonelgaz, specialized technical teams from distribution directorates across several provinces are participating in the operation. These provinces include Skikda, Setif, Souk Ahras, Tebessa, Oum El Bouaghi, Mila, Annaba, Bejaia, and Batna, with the operation being coordinated from the Setif distribution directorate.

“To guarantee the success of this unprecedented undertaking,” the statement emphasized, “nine technical teams, each comprising ten personnel, have been deployed. The teams are equipped with a fleet of 27 vehicles, including 18 four-wheel-drive vehicles and 9 light trucks. These teams consist of electricians, technicians, and maintenance workers, alongside supervisors and team leaders.”

The 15-day campaign, which commenced on Sunday, January 11, 2026, will encompass comprehensive maintenance of the power grid, with a particular focus on medium and low voltage networks, 30-kilovolt lines, electrical transformers, and all related distribution infrastructure.

The maintenance work will be carried out across the provinces of Ouargla (specifically the El Borma border region), El Menia, Djanet, Illizi, Tamanrasset, and In Guezzam. The primary objective is to secure the power grids and ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality energy services. This initiative underscores Sonelgaz’s commitment to deploying all available human and material resources to guarantee a stable and comfortable summer for its customers, while continuing to play a leading role in serving the public and supporting the national economy.
