Algeria Appeals CAF Sanctions Following Nigeria Match

Algiers – The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has officially announced its intention to appeal sanctions imposed by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the Algeria-Nigeria match. The disciplinary actions stem from incidents that occurred during the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarter-final clash on January 10, 2026.

According to a statement released by the FAF, the CAF’s disciplinary committee has levied both sporting and financial penalties against Algerian players and the federation itself. These penalties relate to alleged misconduct both on the field and in the stands.

Specifically, goalkeeper Luca Zidane has been suspended for two matches, which will be served during the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifiers. Defender Rafik Belghali received a four-match suspension, with two matches suspended, also applicable during the CAN 2027 qualifiers.

Furthermore, the FAF faces a series of financial penalties. A $5,000 fine was imposed due to five Algerian players receiving cautions during the match, violating disciplinary regulations. An additional $25,000 fine was issued for what CAF deemed inappropriate behavior by some players and officials after the game, actions considered detrimental to the match’s image.

Penalties were also assessed regarding fan behavior, including a $5,000 fine for the use of pyrotechnics, $5,000 for throwing projectiles, $10,000 for failing to respect security procedures and attempting to breach barriers, and a significant $50,000 fine for allegedly making insulting gestures towards the match officials.

In response to these sanctions, the FAF has stated that it has initiated the appeals process as outlined in the applicable regulations. The federation emphasized its commitment to meticulously pursuing the case and reaffirmed its dedication to defending the interests of Algerian football while adhering to established legal and institutional procedures. The FAF is expected to release further details as the appeal progresses.
