Algeria and Chad Strengthen Partnership in Hydrocarbons and Mining

Algeria and Chad are deepening their collaboration in the hydrocarbons and mining sectors, signaling a commitment to enhanced economic ties. The announcement follows high-level discussions held on the sidelines of the SEMICA TCHAD 2026 event, where Algeria was the guest of honor.

Mohamed Arkab, Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, engaged in formal talks with Chad’s Minister of Petroleum, Mines, and Geology, Ndolenodji Alixe Naïmbaye. The meeting, attended by Algeria’s ambassador to Chad and senior officials including the CEOs of Sonatrach and Naftal, focused on bolstering cooperation between the two nations.

Minister Arkab expressed Algeria’s appreciation for being selected as the guest of honor at the exhibition, emphasizing that the invitation reflects the strength and depth of bilateral relations. He also acknowledged the warm reception extended to the Algerian delegation in N’Djamena.

The discussions centered on the current state and future prospects of Algerian-Chadian cooperation in the hydrocarbons and mining domains, particularly following the signing of bilateral minutes during the Chadian Minister’s visit to Algeria in December 2025. That visit marked a pivotal moment for intensifying practical cooperation between the two countries.

Joint Teams to Drive Partnership

To facilitate effective implementation and sustainable cooperation, both sides agreed to establish two joint teams: one specializing in hydrocarbons and the other in mining. These teams will be responsible for identifying partnership opportunities and monitoring the execution of agreed-upon projects.

South-South Cooperation Emphasized

Minister Arkab affirmed Algeria’s commitment, in line with the directives of the President, to strengthening its African partnerships, particularly with Chad, within the framework of South-South cooperation and supporting shared development pathways across the continent.

The discussions also encompassed opportunities for collaboration across the entire hydrocarbon value chain, from exploration and production to transportation, refining, petrochemicals, and the marketing of petroleum products and liquefied petroleum gas. The potential for partnerships between Sonatrach and its subsidiaries with Chadian institutions was also highlighted.

Emphasis was placed on the importance of training and capacity building, as well as leveraging Algerian expertise to benefit the Chadian energy and mining sectors.
