Algerian Senate President Lauds Anti-Colonialism Law

Algiers – The President of the Council of the Nation (Senate), Mr. Azzouz Nasseri, has praised the substance of the draft law criminalizing French colonialism in Algeria. He described the legislation as a vital reference point for nations that have endured the bitterness and tyranny of colonialism.

Speaking on Thursday, Mr. Nasseri emphasized the significance of the law in addressing the historical injustices inflicted upon the Algerian people during the colonial era. He stated that the law serves not only as a form of redress for past grievances but also as a deterrent against future acts of oppression and exploitation.

“This law is a testament to the resilience and unwavering spirit of the Algerian people,” Mr. Nasseri stated. “It acknowledges the immense sacrifices made by generations of Algerians in their struggle for independence and self-determination.”

He further added that the law’s provisions are meticulously crafted to ensure accountability for the crimes committed during the colonial period. The legislation aims to preserve the historical memory of the Algerian people and to educate future generations about the horrors of colonialism. The Senate President highlighted the importance of documenting and preserving the historical record to prevent the distortion or denial of colonial atrocities.

The proposed law has been met with mixed reactions, with some praising its intent and others expressing concerns about its potential impact on Franco-Algerian relations. However, Mr. Nasseri maintained that the law is a necessary step towards achieving true reconciliation and healing between the two nations. He argued that acknowledging and addressing the past is essential for building a future based on mutual respect and understanding.

The Council of the Nation is currently reviewing the draft law, and a final vote is expected in the coming weeks. The passage of this law would mark a significant milestone in Algeria’s ongoing efforts to confront its colonial past and to safeguard its national identity.
