Following a tense Africa Cup of Nations final between Morocco and Senegal, King Mohammed VI has addressed the nation, emphasizing unity and cautioning against division.
In a statement released by the Royal Palace on Thursday, the King acknowledged the unfortunate incidents that occurred during the final match. He stressed that these events should not undermine the deep-rooted connections between African nations, forged over centuries. “The Moroccan people will not succumb to animosity and division,” the statement declared.
The King expressed his confidence that once emotions subside, the bonds of African brotherhood will naturally prevail. He emphasized that Morocco’s achievements are intrinsically linked to the success of the entire African continent.
“Despite attempts to undermine our credibility,” the statement continued, “His Majesty remains convinced that such hostile schemes will never succeed. The Moroccan people are discerning and will not be swayed by hatred and discord.”
King Mohammed VI reaffirmed Morocco’s unwavering commitment to Africa, stating that the Kingdom has been and will continue to be a staunchly African nation, dedicated to the spirit of brotherhood, solidarity, and respect for the continent. The statement highlighted Morocco’s ongoing dedication to a united and prosperous Africa, emphasizing the sharing of expertise and skills.
The Royal Palace’s statement follows a highly charged final that saw Senegal defeat Morocco 1-0 in extra time. The match was marred by protests, pitch invasions, and clashes with security forces after a penalty was awarded to Morocco. Reports indicate that several individuals were arrested in Rabat following the game.
The King’s message serves as a call for calm and unity in the wake of the controversial match, reinforcing Morocco’s commitment to its African identity and its dedication to fostering positive relations with its continental neighbors.
