Algeria’s Digital Sovereignty Vision Gains Arab Support

Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, has asserted that the ‘Algiers Declaration’ is becoming a key reference point for solidifying the principles of digital sovereignty across the Arab world. Minister Zerrouki made these remarks during the 29th session of the Council of Arab Ministers of Communications and Information, held in Cairo on Thursday.

The Minister highlighted the ‘Algiers Declaration’ initiative, which was adopted during the ministerial summit organized on the occasion of the African Telecommunications Day in December 2025. This declaration focuses on fair, secure, and responsible digital platforms, positioning them as a foundation upon which to build a robust framework for digital governance throughout the Arab region.

Zerrouki emphasized the importance of unified Arab positions on upcoming international engagements, particularly those related to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). He also stressed the need for collaboration on pressing issues such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and the digital economy.

The Minister showcased Algeria’s experience in technological transformation, highlighting the efforts undertaken under the guidance of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Zerrouki explained that Algeria’s approach is based on a solid digital infrastructure, which includes the development of an international telecommunications network, expansion of high-speed fixed internet connectivity, and accelerated deployment of fiber optics.

Furthermore, he mentioned the launch of a fifth-generation (5G) network adhering to the highest standards, and the implementation of data center, artificial intelligence, and youth skills development center projects.

Minister Zerrouki also touched upon reforms within the postal sector, noting the extensive postal network covering the entire national territory. He referenced the move towards modernizing Algeria Post’s services and strengthening its digital solutions to promote financial inclusion and improve the quality of public service.

Finally, the Minister reiterated Algeria’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and commended the recommendations issued by the relevant Council bodies, which reflect the spirit of Arab solidarity. He expressed his hope that the session’s deliberations would culminate in practical decisions that meet the aspirations of the Arab peoples for a comprehensive and sustainable technological renaissance.
