The Algerian government has officially applied to join the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a regional organization comprising countries in Southeast Asia.

Ahmed Attaf, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, revealed this information during a press conference held today on the sidelines of bilateral talks with his Indonesian counterpart, Retno Marsudi, at the ministry’s headquarters. Attaf stated, “Our country has submitted an official application to join the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty of ASEAN.”

Attaf emphasized that “the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, is the bloc with which Algeria aims to build strong relations, aligning with the new direction set by President Tebboune in the foreign policy of our country.”

The discussions between the two parties also resulted in the signing of two legal texts primarily related to diplomatic cooperation. This includes the removal of visa requirements for holders of diplomatic and official passports, as well as collaboration in the fields of energy and mines.

The two parties agreed to activate mechanisms for bilateral cooperation by scheduling the second session of the Algerian-Indonesian Joint Committee and the fourth session of the committee dedicated to political consultations. They also aim to update the legal framework. Minister Attaf revealed ongoing intensified bilateral negotiations between Algeria and Indonesia on 13 legal texts covering various areas such as agriculture, fisheries, infrastructure, higher education, and scientific research.

The meeting also concluded with an agreement on the necessity of establishing a joint business council. Additionally, there is a commitment to promoting events that introduce economic stakeholders to the opportunities for cooperation, partnership, and investment between the two countries.
