Algeria Discusses the African Energy Bank Project

Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines, Mohamed Arkab, received on Wednesday the Secretary General of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), Farid Ghazali, who is on a working visit to Algeria. The visit coincides with his participation in the eighth conference of the Algerian Gas Industry Association, held on March 30 and 31. The meeting was attended by the CEO of Sonatrach, Noureddine Daoudi, along with several ministry officials.

The talks provided an opportunity to exchange views on ways to strengthen cooperation between Algeria and the African Petroleum Producers Organization in the oil and gas sectors, particularly in training, research, and development. They also discussed developments in international energy markets and the prospects for African partnerships in light of global energy transitions.

Both parties addressed organizational aspects, the organization’s roadmap and program for the coming years, and updates regarding the African Energy Bank. They discussed its role in facilitating and financing the development of the oil, gas, and energy industries in Africa, emphasizing the importance of enhancing coordination among member states.

In this context, the Minister of State reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to supporting African nations by sharing its expertise in exploration, production, processing, and training. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Algerian Petroleum Institute in qualifying African professionals to face technical and professional challenges in the energy sector.

He also confirmed Algeria’s unwavering support for the organization’s objectives and initiatives aimed at enabling the continent to effectively and fairly value its natural resources. This includes supporting joint financing mechanisms for energy infrastructure projects and promoting local content development in the African oil and gas industry to enhance economic integration and sustainable development.

For his part, Farid Ghazali expressed his deep gratitude to Algeria for its continuous support of the organization’s goals. He praised its leading role in training, human resource development, and the promotion of research and innovation in the energy sector. He emphasized the importance of oil and gas in serving Africa’s development, strengthening its energy sovereignty, and driving continental industrialization and integration.

Since the establishment of the African Petroleum Producers Organization in 1987, Algeria has continued to play a central role in supporting joint African action through cooperation and the exchange of expertise. This contributes to strengthening the continent’s position as a strategic energy source and achieving sustainable development for its people.
