Algerian international goalkeeper Oussama Benbot, a pivotal player for USM Alger, has underscored the critical importance of two upcoming friendly matches against the Netherlands and Bolivia. These high-profile encounters are scheduled for June 3 in Rotterdam and June 10 in Kansas City, respectively, and are seen as essential preparations for the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Algeria World Cup Preparation

“These two friendly matches will be crucial benchmarks for us to approach the World Cup in the best possible condition,” Benbot stated in an exclusive interview with the Algerian Football Federation’s (FAF) media department. The national squad, known as the ‘Greens’, commenced their World Cup preparations on Monday at the National Technical Centre (CTN) in Sidi Moussa. The initial training camp saw approximately twenty players participating, with the announcement of the final 26-man roster for the US trip expected today during a press conference led by national coach Vladimir Petkovic at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki.

Following a short break for Eid celebrations with their families, the players resumed training on Thursday. This session was notably marked by the return of key figures including captain Riyad Mahrez, Houssem Aouar, and Rayan Aït-Nouri.

Benbot, 31, also made a significant return to the national team, concluding his brief international retirement announced after the last Africa Cup of Nations (CAN-2025). “After the CAN, I made a somewhat hasty decision regarding my international retirement. I’ve since had constructive discussions with the federation president, whom I thank for his understanding, as well as with the national coach. Everything is now resolved,” a relieved Benbot commented. Recognised as the season’s best goalkeeper, Benbot affirmed his full dedication to the Greens’ upcoming challenges, expressing a strong desire to proudly represent his nation.

“I am committed to continuing my work to honourably defend the colours of Algeria,” Benbot concluded, signalling his unwavering commitment to the national cause.
