Algeria and Ban Ki-moon Forge Path for Enhanced Green Growth Cooperation

Algeria's Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mustapha Guitouni, held a significant meeting today in Algiers with the former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. Ban Ki-moon, currently serving as the President of the General Assembly and the Board of Directors of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), is on a visit to Algeria. The discussions centered on enhancing cooperation, particularly in the crucial areas of energy transition, sustainable development, and energy efficiency. These initiatives are closely aligned with Algeria's strategic vision to foster a sustainable economy, as detailed in a statement from the ministry.

During the meeting, which was attended by ministry officials and representatives from the GGGI, both sides explored avenues for strengthening technical and institutional partnerships between Algeria's energy sector and the institute. Key areas of focus include developing studies and programs for the energy transition, advancing renewable energy projects, exploring green hydrogen potential, and managing water resources crucial for energy projects.

Minister Guitouni emphasized the sector's commitment to implementing the directives of Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, aimed at bolstering energy security and solidifying the foundations of sustainable development. He highlighted Algeria's dedication to balancing energy security with the promotion of sustainable economic and social development by maximizing the value of national resources and expanding the contribution of renewable energies to the national energy mix.

In this context, the Minister showcased Algeria's key strategic projects, including a significant program to develop 15,000 megawatts of solar photovoltaic capacity and a dedicated green hydrogen development program. The discussion also touched upon projects related to the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

The Ministry expressed its readiness to collaborate closely with the GGGI teams to develop a practical and effective roadmap that translates shared objectives into tangible actions, thereby strengthening bilateral cooperation.

Former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon commended Algeria's progress in renewable energy development and acknowledged the nation's substantial potential, especially in solar energy. He affirmed the GGGI's commitment to supporting Algeria in executing its projects and programs designed to accelerate the transition towards a low-carbon economy.

Ban Ki-moon also called for enhanced support and collaboration with the GGGI office in Algeria to help it achieve its goals and missions. This support would be instrumental in bolstering Algeria's efforts to meet its objectives in sustainable development, energy transition, and the green economy, the statement concluded.
