Taranto Games: Nemour and Ouikane Claim Gold for Algeria

Kaylia Nemour, an Algerian Olympic champion in gymnastics, secured a gold medal in the individual all-around competition at the Mediterranean Games 2026, held in Taranto, Italy. Nemour achieved a total of 57.750 points, demonstrating a strong performance across all four apparatuses. Her consistent excellence allowed her to finish ahead of Spain's Alba Petisco, who claimed silver with 52.850 points, and Italy's Sofia Tonelli, who earned the bronze with 51.650 points.

Nemour's dominant display included a top score of 15.650 points on the uneven bars, her preferred apparatus, complemented by 13.800 on vault, 14.700 on balance beam, and 13.600 for her floor routine. Following this success, Algerian karateka Cylia Ouikane added another gold medal for Algeria. Ouikane triumphed in the Kumite -50 kg category, overcoming Italy's Erminia Perfetto in a challenging final where she recovered from an initial deficit to win 9-3.

These recent victories significantly bolstered Algeria's standing at the Mediterranean Games 2026. Cylia Ouikane's gold medal marked the sixth for the Algerian delegation, contributing to a total of 25 medals, comprising six gold, six silver, and thirteen bronze. This achievement places Algeria tenth in the overall temporary standings, building on earlier gold medals secured by athletes such as Abd El Karim Fergat in Greco-Roman wrestling, Idriss Mesoud in judo, Djamel Sedjati in athletics, and the national U21 football team.
