Investment Interest Grows in Algeria Among Austrian Businesses

An economic delegation comprising 22 Austrian companies recently conveyed a significant interest in investing within Algeria and strengthening economic partnerships. This expression of intent occurred during the Algerian-Austrian Business Forum, held in Algiers, where discussions focused on potential collaborations across diverse strategic sectors. The delegation, led by Austrian Federal Minister for Economy, Energy, and Tourism Wolfgang Hatmansdorfer, explored various opportunities within the Algerian market.
Key sectors attracting keen Austrian interest include renewable energies, hydrogen, clean technologies, and manufacturing industries. Minister Hatmansdorfer affirmed that Austrian companies possess advanced technological solutions aligning with Algeria's development priorities, emphasizing the geographical proximity between Algeria and Europe as a competitive advantage for robust economic ties. Further highlighting Algeria's potential, Jochen Danninger, Secretary-General of the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, identified Algeria as a pivotal player in shaping the future energy landscape of the Mediterranean basin and Europe.
The Algerian side actively engaged in the forum, with representatives such as Mourad El-Wade, Head of the Energy Committee at the Algerian Economic Renewal Council, encouraging Austrian companies to transition from mere commercial export to direct industrial investment, particularly in mining, agri-food processing, and hydrogen projects. Mahfoud Okba of the Algerian Investment Promotion Agency (AAPI) detailed ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing the business climate and offering attractive guarantees for foreign capital. Lisa Kronreif, Commercial Attaché at the Austrian Embassy, noted that approximately 50 Austrian companies currently operate in Algeria through local partnerships, with infrastructure modernization and economic diversification offering further prospects for bilateral cooperation.
The forum culminated in tangible progress with the signing of a letter of intent between the Algerian company Industriesoft and Austria's Palfinger EMEA GmbH. This agreement outlines cooperation for the development and distribution of lifting and industrial handling solutions, marking an initial practical outcome of the deepened bilateral engagement.
