Justice Minister Affirms Algeria’s Sovereign Decision-Making

Algeria's Justice Minister, Mr. Boujemaa, underscored the nation's sovereign authority in decision-making and its unwavering commitment to human rights and the protection of lives and property. Speaking during a public session of the Council of the Nation, where an amended and supplemented penal code was presented and discussed, the Minister clarified that the activation of the death penalty for perpetrators of intentional forest fires and child kidnapping aligns with presidential instructions. This measure, he explained, is a fundamental step to protect citizens and assets, proportionate to the gravity of such crimes.

The Minister elaborated on the severe threats posed by these criminal acts, noting the significant human and material damage caused by intentional forest fires. Security and judicial investigations have revealed advanced methods employed by both Algerians and foreigners in committing these deliberate acts. Similarly, the extreme seriousness of child kidnapping necessitates robust deterrents through enhanced legal frameworks designed to safeguard this vulnerable segment of society. Mr. Boujemaa also affirmed that the proposal to activate this penalty garnered a positive reception within society, and reiterated the availability of comprehensive mechanisms and scientific expertise to ensure fair trials, including appeal processes to the Supreme Court.

Despite remaining committed to all international covenants, Algeria views these measures as a sovereign decision by a state dedicated to protecting its people. The Justice Minister called upon international critics to also consider adherence to human rights principles in other global contexts, emphasizing Algeria's right to make decisions with full sovereignty. He also highlighted the justice sector's significant progress in digitalization, showcasing broader advancements within the country's legal infrastructure.
