Economic, Banking Ties Eyed by Algerian and Iranian Banks

The Governor of the Central Bank of Algeria, Mohand Bouri, recently held discussions with the Governor of the Central Bank of Iran on the sidelines of the Annual Meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The meeting focused on the current state of monetary, banking, and trade relations between the two countries, with a particular emphasis on enhancing joint economic cooperation and leveraging mutual capacities to strengthen bilateral trade interactions. Mr. Bouri expressed Algeria’s readiness to expand economic and banking cooperation with Iran and underlined the importance of following up on mutual agreements to benefit both nations. The Iranian Central Bank Governor reiterated Iran's serious determination to consolidate economic relations with friendly countries, referencing the historical and political commonalities shared by Algeria and Iran.

These discussions align with broader observations regarding Algeria's economic landscape. Saeed Zare’ Haghighi, the head of Iran Trade Center in Algeria, previously noted that Algeria's significant infrastructure requirements present substantial opportunities for the export of technical and engineering services. He characterized Algeria as a largely untapped economic market and a strategic destination for the private sector, highlighting its geopolitical security and strategic proximity to Europe. Mr. Haghighi also pointed out Algeria's role in the global energy market, supplying approximately 20 percent of Europe’s oil and gas following a decline in Russian exports.

Algeria's robust economic growth has seen its foreign currency revenues increase significantly, rising from around $50 billion to over $300 billion in recent years, which has generated a trade surplus ranging from $20 billion to $30 billion. This financial strength creates extensive scope for economic collaboration. There is strong demand within Algeria for technical and engineering services, major infrastructure projects, and the construction of silos and storage facilities crucial for food security. Furthermore, Algeria possesses considerable industrial and mining potential, particularly in steel and phosphate sectors. Iranian companies, possessing the requisite technical knowledge and experience, are well-positioned to meet these needs, and the Iran Trade Center in Algeria is prepared to facilitate opportunities for exporters and promote participation in specialized exhibitions.
